Westfield teams up for winning partnership with transplant games

Health cash plan provider Westfield Health is showing its support for the UK’s transplant athletes by once again backing their annual multi-sports event. It is the title sponsor for the Westfield Health British Transplant Games Belfast 2011, which take place from August 4 - August 7.

The games bring together some 1800 transplant athletes, who have all received life-saving organ transplants including heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas or bone marrow, and their families. They come from all corners of the UK to compete in a range of sporting events to demonstrate the success of the life-saving progamme. The aim of the Games is to raise awareness of organ donation and transplantation, and this year the target is to encourage an additional 19,000 people from Northern Ireland to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Currently more than 10,000 people are waiting for organ transplants in the UK. Tragically, a severe shortage of donor organs means that as many as one in three people on the waiting list are likely to die before having a life-saving operation. But only 28 per cent of the adult population has so far joined the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Graham Moore of Westfield Health says, “The games have a proven track record of raising awareness of organ donation and of encouraging thousands of people to sign up to the register. I encourage everyone to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register and give the gift of life.”

To join the NHS Organ Donor Register visit http://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/ukt/ or call 0300 123 23 23, lines are open 24 hours a day, all year round.
