West Midlands is the fattest area in the UK

The Hospital Group
New data has revealed that the UK is one of the unhealthiest nations in Europe, with many classed as dangerously overweight or morbidly obese

Figures released from the Public Health Observatories showed that the UK is the fattest nation in the EU thanks to a diet of junk food and very little exercise.

The UK as a whole scored particularly badly on obesity but it was the West Midlands who held the highest percentage of obese adults, with 29 per cent of the population in that area classed as obese –nearly double that of the EU average, 14 per cent.

And last year research by leading weight loss surgery provider, The Hospital Group, also found that people in the West Midlands were seriously damaging their health as well as their career prospects.

Of the 2,056 adults questioned by The Hospital Group, 49% of those tipping the scales in the West Midlands  sat below the national average salary- bringing in a personal income of less than £20,000* a year.

Along with earning less, obese people, those with a Body Mass Index above 30, were suffering the real cost of obesity as their health suffered from their weight.

Causing high blood pressure, strokes, depression and even diabetes, being overweight can put a serious strain on people’s lives and stop them from living life to the full.

Bariatric surgeon, Mr Sigurdsson, from the UK’s largest provider of weight loss surgery, The Hospital Group, said: “This is a growing problem that we need to address and take control of or a whole generation will become seriously overweight and risk their health as a result.

“Being overweight can affect every area of your life and cause people to suffer in their careers, family life and most importantly their health.

“Whilst bariatric surgery is by no means a quick fix, and patients need to work with the gastric band, bypass or balloon, it can help transform a patient’s life for the better and allow them to lead a much fuller and healthier life.

“At The Hospital Group we understand that it can be hard to break the cycle of over eating and we help patients to overcome this by providing them with support through every step of their journey.”

Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has grown from a small pharmaceutical company to one of the UK’s foremost cosmetic and obesity surgery providers. The Hospital Group is committed to providing the very highest standards and all procedures are performed by an expert medical team in state-of-the-art facilities that are second to none.
