A shocking new report has revealed that the UK is one of the most obese and overweight nations in the European Union with a quarter of adults in the UK classed as obese.
Other overweight countries included Ireland, where 23 per cent of the nation is classed as obese or overweight and Malta where 22 per cent of people are heavily overweight.
The study examined the health of people in 31 countries, including the 27 European Union member states and discovered that on average just over 15 per cent of the EU adult population is obese through a lack of exercise and unhealthy eating.
Drinking calorific beverages such as beer and wine, adults in the UK are piling on the pounds and putting their health at risk by drinking large volumes of alcohol every year, as well as indulging in the variety of fast foods on offer.
Those who are worried about being overweight should book a consultation with an expert bariatric surgeon at The Hospital Group.
The Hospital Group is the UK’s biggest provider of weight loss surgery, including gastric bands, gastric bypasses and gastric balloons.
David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group said: “Being overweight can affect every aspect of your life. Not only does it have a huge impact on your health, putting you at risk of diabetes, heart disease, strokes and depression but it can also cause low self esteem and confidence.
“Many people who are overweight often struggle with their appearance and find it hard to go out and lead a full and healthy lifestyle. They can become locked in a battle of overeating and don’t know how to change their destructive eating habits.
“Our consultants ensure that, as well as having an absolute need for a gastric procedure, the patient understands that weight loss surgery isn’t a miracle cure and they would need to work with the band to achieve the healthier lifestyle they desire.”
