Obesity treatment could be needed by residents of the West Midlands as the region has been identified as the most overweight in the European Union.
Indeed, a recent report compiled by the Association of Public Health Observatories found that 29 per cent of adults in the area are obese.
This is double the European average of 14 per cent and well above the lowest UK rate of 18 per cent, recorded in the south east.
Professor John Wilkinson, who authored the report, said that even the south-east is lagging behind.
He said: "The fine grading of the report shows that in areas where we think we are doing better in terms of obesity, such as the south-east region, we are still actually far behind areas such as Scandinavia.
"The findings demonstrate that even in parts of the UK where we think we are doing quite well there's a long way to go."
