Laser eye surgery celebrates 21st birthday

Laser eye surgery
This year marks the 21st anniversary since the very first laser eye surgery procedure was carried out in Germany.

Since 1988, around half a million people in the UK alone are thought to have benefited from laser eye surgery, many of whom no longer need to wear glasses or contact lenses.

Around the world, some 30 million people have had their eyes corrected and the procedure has been approved by the police, armed forces and Nasa.

During the operation, the cornea of the eye is reshaped so that vision is restored.

According to specialist laser eye surgery clinic Optimax, around 300,000 patients have walked through its doors.

The company claims that 95 per cent of soft lens wearers, 85 per cent of hard lens wearers and 85 per cent of glasses wearers are suitable candidates for laser eye surgery.

Prices start at £395 per eye and include up to one year of aftercare.
