New technology could relieve knee and back pain

A new machine is now available at Spire Bushey Hospital that could help people suffering from knee and back pain, it has been revealed.

Patients visiting the private hospital can now benefit from the Gaitscan - a machine that uses a pressure plate to measure how people walk.

Experts suggest that the machine will be particularly useful for treating athletes with recurrent injuries and patients with persistent lower limb or spinal dysfunction.

The machine scans at 300 times per second, producing 2D and 3D images of the patient's foot.

The information can then be used to help people whose knee and lower back pain is down to an incorrect gait.

Commenting on the machine, which is not available on the NHS, physiotherapy manager Miranda Dodd said: "The Gaitscan lets us give a much more in depth analysis for our patients so we can tailor treatment to the individual.

"If necessary, special tailored shoe insoles called orthotics can be ordered online to help correct gait problems."
