The country's leading reproductive healthcare charity, Marie Stopes International, is offering a special Christmas Emergency Contraception kit to help women be prepared for the festive party season.
The charity, which provides expert advice on sexual health, termination of pregnancy, female sterilisation and vasectomy, is filling the kits with a pack of the emergency contraception Levonelle One Step, two condoms and a sexual health guide especially tailored for Christmas.
Kits will be available for £25 from the charity's nine UK centres and should help to prevent unwanted sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and pregnancies during the party season.
Liz Davies, director of UK operations at Marie Stopes International, said that the charity was not encouraging women to go out and have sex, but was advising partygoers to be responsible and prepared in case they lose their inhibitions over Christmas and the New Year.
"Every January and February Marie Stopes International sees a sharp rise in termination of pregnancies and this is something we are keen to address," Ms Davies revealed.
"Condoms can help prevent unwanted pregnancies and STIs but even so accidents can still happen.
"If a woman already has emergency contraception she can take it straight away when it is most effective rather than delay and risk the chance of an unwanted pregnancy."
