Low-fat diet could prevent breast cancer recurrence

Eating a low-fat diet could be a good way of preventing a recurrence of breast cancer, according to US researchers.

A team led by Dr Rowan Chlebowski of the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute in California found that women who reduced their dietary fat intake to 33 grams per day were 24 per cent less likely to experience a recurrence of breast cancer than those who did not.

In the dietary intervention group, 9.8 per cent of women suffered a relapse, while 12.4 per cent of women in the control group, who maintained their fat intake at around 51 grams per day, experienced a relapse.

"A lifestyle intervention reducing dietary fat intake, with modest influence on body weight, may improve relapse-free survival of breast cancer patients receiving conventional cancer management," the researchers wrote.

The study is published in the December 20th issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
