Private health insurer PruHealth is backing the government campaign to get us all to reduce our salt consumption.
Too much salt increases the risk of major heart disease and strokes. Salt is hidden in processed foods. The average person consumes 10 to 12 grams of salt each day, twice the recommended maximum of 6 grams.
It is estimated that if everyone followed this advice, there would be 70,000 fewer strokes and heart attacks every year.
PruHealth policyholders can get vitality points by downloading a new PruHealth Salt Guide which advises how to cut down on salt. Vitality points, which reduce premiums, are earned for a range of healthy activities.
