Cover for travellers with health conditions

Hundreds of thousands of travellers across the UK are paying a high price for suffering from forgotten illnesses, warns travel insurer Columbus Direct.

Columbus Direct believes that a lack of awareness about some rarer conditions means that sufferers are being unfairly targeted for sky-high travel insurance premiums, even though sufferers of more common illnesses may avoid them.

Sam O'Connor, business manager says: "It is a sad fact that one in three of us living in the UK will, at some point in our lives, suffer from cancer. In 2004 alone, more than 233,000 new cases of cancer were registered in the UK. But we also need to consider that people across the country are suffering from illnesses that can be just as serious, and yet they are being forced to pay over the odds for good travel cover. It is commendable that people are taking action and setting up their own businesses to provide cover for those most at need. But a shame that there are other illnesses, just as serious, that don't necessarily command the same media agenda, and do not inspire the same kind of sympathy when it comes to insurance. Sufferers of these conditions are often subject to very high travel insurance premiums, and it is essential that the industry does something to bring parity to the market."
