Recent research has suggested that pomegranate juice may reduce the risk of developing heart disease and stroke.

Conducted by scientists at the Queen Margaret University in Scotland, the report revealed that 90 per cent of volunteers who drank the fruit juice for a month had "significantly" lower blood pressure.

High blood pressure is the one of the main causes of the development of heart disease.

Dr Emad Aldujaili and Dr Catherine Tsang, who conducted the study, commented: "There is no doubt the juice reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease."

Around 94,000 premature deaths a year in the UK are caused by heart disease, according to figures from the British Heart Foundation.

Men have a slightly higher chance of the health problem proving fatal, with one in five men and one in seven women dying from heart disease.

Strokes account for around 55,000 deaths a year.
