Cosmetic surgery adhesive gets EU approval for use in browlifts

A new surgical adhesive has been granted approval for use in browlift cosmetic surgery in Europe.

Cryolife's BioGlue Surgical Adhesive has been approved for use in cosmetic surgery and will be marketed and trialled by BioForm Medical.

The adhesive creates a flexible mechanical seal within 20 to 30 seconds and has been shown to be safe and effective in over 400,000 procedures, according to Steven Anderson, president and chief executive officer of Cryolife.

"We are pleased that BioGlue is now available for use in browlift cosmetic and plastic surgery in the European Community. We look forward to continuing to expand BioGlue's applications and availability worldwide," Mr Anderson said.

Steven Basta, chief executive officer of BioForm Medical, said that the company is "particularly excited" by the potential for BioGlue in browlift procedures, although he revealed that the adhesive also has many other possible applications in cosmetic surgery.

"This is an important step in our overall development strategy to evaluate the use of BioGlue as a quick and easy-to-use fixation method in plastic surgery," he added.
