Cosmetic dentists 'can alter gum shape'

Cosmetic dentistry can be used to adjust the shape of an individual's gums, it has been noted.

A dentist at the Marietta clinic in Georgia highlighted the fact that well-contoured teeth and gums can "make a significant difference in a smile".

Dr Kirk Kimmerling explained that it is "a rewarding and enjoyable part of dentistry" to makeover an individual's smile and see them happy with the way that they look.

This can be done by adjusting the dimensions and parameters of a person's gum tissue that frames the top of their tooth in order to make it more attractive.

The appropriate amount of enamel can be exposed and teeth themselves can be reshaped using contouring methods.

However, Dr Kimmerling highlighted the fact that teeth and gums must be in good condition before these procedures are considered.

Indeed, Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, explained recently that cosmetic dentistry is "not a sensible investment if your oral hygiene on a daily basis is not up to scratch"
