Cosmetic dentistry clinic to offer free oral cancer screening

A London cosmetic dentistry centre will offer free oral cancer screening for 18 to 25-year-old women from November 16th to 22nd.

Aqua Dental Spa has teamed up with Optident, which distributes oral cancer screening equipment, to provide the service.

The company's VELscope system can painlessly and non-invasively detect both cancerous and pre-cancerous tissue that would otherwise not be easily detectable.

Clinic founder Dr Anoop Maini, who is also a board member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD), revealed that oral cancer kills one person every three hours in the UK.

"We are offering the screening free for women between 18 and 25 during this period to increase awareness of this fast-growing disease among young people, and highlight the importance of testing," he explained.

The expert added that 90 per cent of oral cancers are curable if discovered early enough.

According to Cancer Research UK figures, around 4,900 people are diagnosed with cancers of the mouth and oropharynx - the part of the throat just behind the mouth - every year in the UK.
