Consumers face 31% increase in funeral costs

A new survey by Mintel on behalf of life insurer Sun Life Direct says that since 2004 the average increase in price of a funeral has been 42.3%. Funeral costs are up again and payment is becoming a problem for some people. In the last twelve months funeral costs have risen by an average of 7.2% to £2,733 for a standard funeral.

In addition to the funeral there are other additional costs. These are probate, death & funeral notices, wake venue hire and catering, flowers, order sheets for the funeral, extra limo hire, and memorial. While the average funeral cost is only £2,733, these extras bring the total average cost to £7,098.

54% of the deceased had made provision; of those 54%, 59% cited savings and investments, life insurance plan 25% and pre-paid funeral plan 19%. For the 46% of deceased who had not made provision, payment was made from the estate and sometimes from the family.

77% of funerals are cremations, average cost £2,448, and 23% are burials, average cost £3,018. There are substantial regional variations in costs; a London burial averages £4,600.

The research estimates that funeral costs will increase by 31% to £3,81 by 2014.
