Cancer treatment clue with discovery of role of vitamin D

Cancer treatment has been given a boost by the discovery of the role of vitamin D in the development of the disease.

Scientists at the San Diego Moores Cancer Center at the University of California found that the Dinomit process, which works by preventing cancer cells from being able to clump together, could be effective in arresting the progress of the disease.

Maintaining normal levels of vitamin D have been found to enable Dinomit to occur, the research, which is published in the publication Annals of Epidemiology concluded.

Dr Cedric Garland, epidemiologist and professor of family and preventive medicine at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, commented: "Competition and natural selection among disjoined cells within a tissue compartment, such as might occur in the breast's terminal ductal lobular unit, for example, are the engine of cancer."

He added that the Dinomit could provide a template for the prevention of cancer and the effective treatment of the disease.

The production of vitamin D is dependant on the presence of UV light.
