BUPA publishes data on treatment outcomes

For the first time in the private hospital sector, a company is publishing information about clinical and service quality, online. Patients and GPs can now access easy-to-read outcomes data about all Bupa Hospitals on the Bupa web site.

Outcomes data published includes:

  • infections rates - for both MRSA and hip surgical site infections
  • re-admission rates
  • return to theatre rates
  • patient reported health improvement results following hip replacements and cataract surgery
  • patient satisfaction with aspects of treatment such as consultant quality of service, nursing care, hospital cleanliness and quality of food

Bupa Hospitals undertook a consultation exercise on indicators of clinical quality with patients, GPs and consultants, and identified these measures as being the most relevant. Patients considering treatment at a BUPA hospital can now make informed healthcare choices by viewing these clinical and service indicators.

According to Clare Hollingsworth, managing director of Bupa Hospitals Ltd:

"Bupa Hospitals is committed to informed patient choice and we're delighted to be the standard bearer for the independent sector by publishing this data. We hope others follow suit to the benefit of all patients," said Clare Hollingsworth, managing director of Bupa Hospitals Ltd. We believe that patients can only make a meaningful choice about their healthcare when they have full access to the information they need."
