Bupa gets tough with hospitals

Bupa is probably to start removing hospitals from its provider network in 2012.

At least 12 BMI hospitals will be removed from the network of providers when contracts expire in January. Bupa has decided to take action against large private hospital groups’ use of uniform pricing across their hospitals and a lack of competition in some areas.

Bupa believes that customers should not have to pay for pricing in private hospitals caused by debt interest costs, which it estimates to be £300 million a year.

How much of this is a reality and how much a negotiating tactic to get better deals from hospitals, is debatable.
