BMI fibroid surgeon recognised as one of the best in the UK

Consultant Interventional Radiologist Dr Paul Crowe, who practices at BMI The Priory Hospital, has been named by peers as being in the UK’s top 10 fibroid surgeons in a survey conducted by the Daily Mail.

The survey, which canvassed 40 leading gynaecologists and interventional radiologists, asked just one question: ‘If your own nearest and dearest were to need fibroid treatment to whom would you refer them and why?’ In the Daily Mail article that announced the survey, fellow surgeons said the following of Dr Crowe:

“An excellent operator who set up the service in the West Midlands and does a huge number of fibroid operations that have yielded first-class results. With Paul Crowe, it’s not just about technical excellence — he is also patient-centred and manages to make them feel they are in the driver’s seat at all times.”

Dr Crowe was deeply flattered by the accolade, and also explained the importance of his field.“Often our patients are in pain, their lives revolve around their heavy periods and some have been through the heartache of infertility and miscarriage as a result of fibroids, and it’s our job is to do as much as we can as clinicians (interventional radiologists or gynaecologists) to help restore some normality. In doing so, we always strive to deliver the care that we would want our own loved ones to receive,” said Dr Crowe. “I am immensely humbled, not only by this recognition, but also by the trust placed in me by my peers.”

Executive Director of BMI The Priory Hospital, Keith Cunningham added: “We are extremely proud that Dr Crowe has received this distinction - it’s a great honour and very much deserved. Fibroid embolisation is a highly-skilled specialty and he is an excellent interventionalist who is respected by colleagues, staff and patients alike.

“BMI The Priory Hospital was one of the earliest UK hospitals to offer this treatment and now has a 10 year track record with Dr Crowe.”

Dr Crowe attended Trinity College Medical School in Dublin, graduating in 1988. After medical jobs in Dublin, Manchester and the Middle East he undertook five years of specialist training in Radiology in Birmingham followed by further sub speciality training in Interventional Radiology. He has been a Consultant Interventional Radiologist at BMI The Priory Hospital since December 1998 and Birmingham Heartlands Hospital since May 1998. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) and of the Faculty of Radiologists of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FFRRCSI) and is a member of the British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR), the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (CIRSE) and The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR, USA).

Dr Crowe actively participates in teaching and research and is the lead Interventional Radiology Trainer for the West Midlands Radiology Training Scheme. He sits on the Communications Committee of the BSIR as well as numerous local committees including the Heart of England NHS Trust’s Novel Therapeutics Committee. He is an invited speaker at national and international meetings.
