Barbeque binging encourages obesity

Barbeque binging is the latest health concern amongst experts after a study revealed that barbeques encourage obesity due to the high amount of calories they contain.

Recent research shows that barbeques give people the chance to pile their plates which encourages binge eating and leads to an unhealthy lifestyle.

The average barbeque plate is said to include two sausages, one and a half burgers, two chicken drumsticks, one and a half meat skewers, fish, a baked potato, a green side salad, pasta salad, a desert and fruit salad, all of which totals a staggering 3,000 calories. This exceeds the recommended daily intake of calories for men by 500 and by 1,000 for women.

But, it is not only calories that these dinners are packed with. According to Consensus Action on Salt & Health, there are also high levels of salt with a standard meal comprising a hotdog with mustard, a burger with cheese and BBQ sauce, a piece of marinated meat, some coleslaw, potato salad and plain crisps with dips having up to 12.11g of salt. This is more than double the recommended maximum of 6g for an adult.  Add to this the BBQ sauces that accompany these meats and salads, some of which contain more salt than sea water, and the meal packs a calorific punch that is sure to pile on the pounds.

With the UK in the middle of an obesity crisis that shows no signs of slowing down experts fear that more people could become overweight and enter into an unhealthy lifestyle this summer as they over indulge in fatty BBQs.

The number of people admitted for obesity to Hospitals in the UK has shot up nearly nine times in 10 years with last year's numbers increasing by an astounding 60 per cent in just one year.
