Backcare Awareness Week - check insurance

With two in five adults expected to suffer back pain over the next year, the Post Office urges people to check that they are protected financially in case they are unable to work as a result.

Back Care Awareness Week, runs from 16-21 October, and is  organised by BackCare. BackCare is a UK charity that helps people manage and prevent back pain by providing advice, promoting self-help, encouraging debate and funding scientific research into better back care.

Slouching in chairs, a hunched driving position, and being generally unfit can all be causes of short-term back problems.  At any one time half a million people in the UK are absent from work due to back complaints.

The Post Office urges anyone who is concerned about short-term back problems in the future to check that their income is protected, to avoid getting into debt if they are unable to work.

Lifestyle Protection from the Post Office doesn’t require specialist evidence for the first 30 days of being unable to work due to back pain.

GP evidence must be provided for first 30 days of cover.  Any back complaint must be investigated and diagnosed by a consultant specialising in the relevant field for continued policy payment after the first 30 days of cover.  Cover does not extend to pre-existing back conditions.

Post Office Head of Insurance, Phil Ashkuri, says: “Many people fail to look at the small print when buying a PPI policy so aren’t aware that they may not be covered for short-term back problems under their standard PPI.  Lifestyle Protection from the Post Office offers a valuable benefit to customers that develop a short-term back complaint, and we urge people to check the small print to understand what is and isn’t covered under their policy.”
