Stress can cause wider problems, expert warns

Stress can cause wider problems

People struggling to cope with fast-paced, hardworking lifestyles have been advised that failure to seek help with stress can lead to a wide range of other health problems over the long term.

Stress Management Society director Neil Shah explained that many individuals now find themselves in a near-constant "fight or flight" situation, with the demands of modern life often threatening to overwhelm them.

"Many people never leave this heightened state of stress," he commented. "This results in a disruption of bodily functions such as the digestive system, growth and reproductive systems and can lead to a wide spectrum of health impacts."

Mr Shah added that some people find the demands of the workplace "relentless" and suggested the anxiety that often results from this can trigger physiological changes and alter the hormonal balance of the body.

Earlier this week, researchers from the University of Glasgow warned that stress can prove contagious between couples and even lead to a premature death in some cases.
