Study 'could revolutionise ME treatment'

ME Research UK

The treatment and diagnosis of myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) could be revolutionised by the results of a recent study.

This is according to Dr Neil Abbot, operations director of ME Research UK.

ME, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome, is sometimes diagnosed as post-viral fatigue syndrome.

The research in question was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

It established a link between chronic fatigue syndrome and the presence of DNA from a xenotropic murine leukaemia virus-related virus in peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Dr Abbot explained its significance: "With this new paper there is the possibility of a diagnostic test for the presence of the virus, and if the virus is the cause of any chronic fatigue syndrome then an antiviral combination might be the appropriate thing to do.

"That's why the paper is very exciting - it could revolutionise diagnosis and also treatment."
