Increased risk of cancer found in processed meats

American Institute for Cancer Research

Recent research has revealed that people who eat a large amount of processed meats may be at a higher risk of developing cancer

The study, which was published in the online journal of the American Cancer Society, found adults who consumed the highest amounts of nitrate and nitrite were around 30 per cent more likely to develop bladder cancer than those who consumed the lowest amounts.

Additives were found in meats including sausages and packaged ham.

American Institute for Cancer Research director of research Susan Higginbotham commented: "This new finding lends further support to our recommendation to limit consumption of red meat and to specifically avoid processed meat."

Bladder cancer is the seventh most common cancer in the UK and is diagnosed in around 10,300 people every year, according to statistics from Cancer Research.

The charity also claims that bladder cancer is twice as likely to occur in men as it is in women.
