Red meat consumption 'linked to CHD'

Eating red meat can result in an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), it has been suggested.

A study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health has revealed that women who consume large amounts of the meat are at a higher risk than those who eat varied sources of protein, such as poultry, fish or nuts.

Sian Porter, dietician and spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association, commented: "There are risks associated with high intakes of red meat, particular cancers, for example.

"Red meat is fine as part of a healthy balanced diet, but variety is important as well."

The dietician confirmed that a mix of protein foods was good for a person's health.

"You should try and have a mix of protein foods and try not to eat meat every day," she said.

"Meat belongs to protein food and that includes fish, eggs and pulses such as beans, chick peas, kidney beans and lentils."
