Mindfulness 'can tackle mental health'

Research has suggested that mindfulness can help to tackle stress and other mental health issues.

Conducted at the University of Oregon, the study found that Chinese meditation Integrative Body-Mind Training can have a positive effect on brain imaging.

Brain efficiency in the areas which help a person to regulate their behaviour in accordance with their goals was found to be particularly improved.

Simon Lawton-Smith, head of policy at the Mental Health Foundation, commented: "There is a considerable amount of clinical data demonstrating benefits in a number of areas of mental health. These include alleviating symptoms of depression, general anxiety disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome, insomnia and stress.

"It has even been found to be beneficial in people with bipolar disorder at high risk of suicide, and has been used to treat addictions for drugs and alcohol."

A specially-developed online course is due to be offered on the Mental Health Foundation's website as of next month in order to help people who are keen to learn more about mindfulness.
