The first international cosmetic surgery research has revealed that the US is the number one country in terms of volume of procedures.
Conducted by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), the research found that China saw the second highest number of surgical and non-surgical treatments in 2009.
The UK, meanwhile, came in 17th position.
Breast augmentations were pipped to the post in terms of popularity, accounting for 17 per cent of surgical treatments compared to the most popular procedure, liposuction, which represented 18.8 per cent of operations.
Dr Jan Poell of Switzerland, the incoming president of ISAPS, commented: "The statistics revealed from the ISAPS Global Survey represent the first credible and reliable baseline of information in the field.
"This is valuable information that will be used by medical professionals and media as an indispensable tool for calculating developments within our specialty and general trends, long before governments or industry have amassed this data."
