Higher death risk for those with bigger waists

Obesity

New research has revealed that people with a large waistline are destined to die early.

The study shows that fat around the stomach has been linked to severe health problems including type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol levels and heart disease.

These problems can occur when fat tissue surrounds organs in the abdominal area which experts believe is more dangerous than fat tissue located under the skin.

Medical expert Dr Eric Jacobs and his colleagues of the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, Georgia, examined the relationship between waist size and the risk of early death among 48,500 men and 56,343 women age 50 and above.

After taking body mass index (BMI) and other risk factors into consideration, they discovered that men over the age of 50 with a waist 47 inches or over, and women over the age of 50 with a waist 42 inches or over were twice as likely to die during the nine year long study.

The older a person is the slower the speed of the metabolism becomes causing weight gain and it is at this point that most people become less active and more stressed leading to an unhealthier lifestyle.

High levels of cortisol, the 'stress hormone' increase appetite and cause the body to crave fatty and sugary foods which effectively cause weight gain around the abdominal area.

Those worried about their weight can come for a consultation at The Hospital Group, the UK's biggest provider of weight loss surgery, including gastric bands, gastric bypasses and gastric balloons which can give you a healthier lifestyle.
