A growing number of people are considering fertility treatment, it has been suggested.
Sarah Montagu, administration secretary at the Association of Radical Midwives, suggested that the trend to have children at a later stage in life could be behind the increase.
"I would have said if anything, [demand for fertility treatment has] increased partly because there is an increase in the numbers of people waiting to start a family," she noted.
"They're waiting a while for the right person to come along to start trying [for a baby] and then discover that it's not as they hoped it would be."
Earlier this year, the University of California-San Francisco revealed that the pregnancy rate of couples using IVF decreased after the second or third round of treatment.
Ms Montagu warned that every session of IVF represented a health risk for the woman involved due to the fact that it is risky to retrieve an egg.
