The risk of developing certain hormonal cancers can be increased by alcohol consumption, it has been suggested.
A research project published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that hormone-sensitive breast cancers were particularly susceptible to how much a woman drank.
Women who drank more than seven alcoholic beverages a week demonstrated an almost two-fold increase in their chances of developing the developing hormone-receptor-positive cancer invasive lobular carcinoma, compared to women who never drank.
More than 2,000 women took part in the research project, which found that there was no significant difference between drinkers and non-drinkers when it came to the chances of developing invasive ductal carcinoma, a more common form of breast cancer.
Dr Rachel Thompson, from the World Cancer Research Fund, told the Daily Mail: "Looking at all the evidence, there is convincing evidence that alcohol increases risk of breast cancer.
"We estimate that about one in five cases of breast cancer in the UK could be prevented through people cutting down the amount they drink."
