Adults who regularly overeat are placing themselves at heightened risk of requiring cancer treatment for the most common types of the disease, experts have warned.
Earlier this year, statistics published by the NHS Information Centre revealed that the number of Britons eating healthily continues to rise, with 27 per cent of men and 31 per cent of women now regularly consuming the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetable a week.
However, according to the British Nutrition Foundation, many people are continuing to overeat, placing themselves at risk of not just obesity, but also of developing the likes of colon cancer, postmenopausal breast cancer, endometrical cancer and cancer of the oesophagus and pancreas.
Dr Laura Wyness, senior nutrition scientist at the charity, advised: "It is important that people maintain a healthy weight and do regular physical activity."
She added that, as pre-prepared foods can often be high in fat, sugar and salt, it's important to read labels thoroughly and is usually a good idea to prepare meals at home.
