Infertility treatment for Pcos could benefit from acupuncture

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (Pcos) undergoing infertility treatment infertility may be interested to learn that an alternative therapy could be used to alleviate their condition.

Researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg in Sweden have found that administering acupuncture and taking exercise could help the disease.

Women who had acupuncture found that their menstrual cycle became more regulated compared with women who only took some exercise and those who did neither.

Elisabet Stener Victorin, who led the research at the Sahlgrenska Academy, commented: "We do not know for certain what causes the condition, despite it being so common.

"We have seen that women with the syndrome often have high activity in that part of the nervous system that we cannot consciously control, known as the 'sympathetic nervous system'.

Some five per cent of women suffer from Pcos, which is an endocrine disorder and major cause of infertility.
