Latest Norwich Union claims figures

In 2007, Norwich Union paid out more than £106 million in critical illness claims , compared to £90 million in 2006.

1387 payments made up 85% of total claims, compared to 75% in 2006.

Another 5% are pending, while the remainder were declined for non-disclosure of relevant information, or not meeting claims criteria.

The most common claims:

• Cancer - making up over 60% of claims

• Heart attacks - 11%

• Multiple sclerosis - 6%

• The largest claim was £488,060 to a 61-year-old man with brain cancer.

• The smallest was £ 12,229 to a woman for heart surgery.

• The average was £77,000
