London private clinic offers oral cancer screening

Dental Professional, Romania, Dentist
A private clinic in London is the first in the city to offer a new pain-free technique to detect oral cancer.

The disease is one of the fastest-growing forms of cancer in the UK but ViziLite oral lesion screening can detect abnormalities that may be early signs of cancer.

The patient simply uses a mouth rinse for one minute before the dentist shines a light wand into their mouth.

Any abnormalities will glow a blue-white colour under the light and the patient can then be referred to a specialist if cancer treatment is required.

Malcolm Torz, dental specialist and clinic director at the London Day Surgery Centre, explained that mouth cancers can be "extremely" hard to detect, but that the chances of survival are greatly improved if a diagnosis is made early.

"Every dentist should be doing visual screening for cancer on their patients as routine," the expert claimed.

"This revolutionary and simple test can help save lives, which is why we are delighted to be the first clinic to offer the screening in London."

More than 4,700 new cases of mouth and oropharyngeal cancer are diagnosed in the UK each year.
