Health-on-Line comment on hospital bug infestations

Health-on-line logo

Recent reports have shown alarming levels and variety of pest infestations. These range from the less worrying variety such as flying ants, wasps and flies to the more concerning including maggots, rats and mice.

Mark Martin, Managing Director of Health-on-Line says, "Although we are not saying that private hospitals are immune to pest infestation or hospital acquired infections, the rates of occurrence are considerably lower. The question to ask is why is that? Private hospitals have not suffered the high rates of infection cases and this seems to be down to the priority given to hygiene and cleanliness. Many private centres do not employ external companies to clean the premises and ensure a rigorous routine is adhered too. Whilst the reports seem to ignite concerns about the hygiene standards and cleanliness in hospitals, the Department of Health appears sceptical of the suggestions these infestations could contribute to the spread of infections. For many individuals, the thought of having to spend any time in a hospital can be unnerving, and the added worry of hygiene and cleanliness contributes further to these concerns. Many see PMI and the access to private hospitals that this gives, as a real alternative to alleviate this concern.”
