Record number of knee and hip surgery procedures using Orthosoft computerised system

orthosoft

Orthosoft, which specialises in computerised systems for orthopaedic surgery, has announced record numbers of knee and hip procedures using its system.

More hip and knee surgeries were completed using its systems during the first six months of 2006 than during all of last year in North America, with 1,396 procedures taking place so far this year, compared to just 509 for the same period in 2005.

The figures also do not reflect the growing number of surgeries carried out by company partners using Orthosoft's systems in the US and Europe.

Dr Louis Amiot, orthopaedic surgeon and the company's co-CEO, commented: "At least 11 patients every day benefited from an Orthosoft computer system, based on our record number of hip and knee procedures from our direct sales team in US and Canada.

"More than ever before, orthopaedic surgeons are adopting our new, easier to use surgical navigation system to guide hip and knee replacements to improve patient outcomes."

Many orthopaedic surgeons expect computer-assisted surgery to become a standard of care in implant surgery, with clinical studies showing that it can improve the accuracy of orthopaedic surgery by over 20 per cent, reduce post-operative pain and improve function.

"Usage has increased significantly because surgeons like our new universal hip and knee applications and we are expanding the sales force," revealed Yvan Beaudoin, vice-president of marketing and sales at Orthosoft, which now has sales teams throughout the US, Canada and Europe.
