Rise in body contouring linked to weight loss surgery

The number of people seeking body contouring procedures has increased in line with the number of patients undergoing weight loss surgery, according to surgeons.

Cosmetic surgery procedures performed to remove excess skin have increased in number by 22 per cent since 2005 in the US, according to figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Such procedures constitute the five fastest growing cosmetic surgeries, with some 68,000 body contouring procedures performed last year.

Surgeons believe that the rise is directly related to the increase infast weight loss  obesity surgery, including gastric bypass and laparoscopic procedures, which have risen from just 16,000 annual procedures a decade ago to 170,000 in 2005.

When people lose a large amount of weight in a short period of time, residual skin that has lost its elasticity is normally left behind.

"We are seeing a large number of people come into our offices after having gastric surgery," revealed Dr Stephen Greenberg, New York's leading cosmetic surgeon.

"And, while excited about the fast weight loss, they are still disheartened by the fact that the remaining skin folds prohibit them from feeling confident in bathing suits and similar clothing."

Body contouring procedures, which remove the excess skin from areas of the body and face, are therefore becoming more popular and generated over $700,000 million in surgeon's fees in the US alone last year.
