Could private maternity services help women to breastfeed?

Could private maternity services help women to breastfeed?

Private maternity services could be needed by women who are keen to breastfeed their children.

According to Sarah Montagu, admin secretary for the Association of Radical Midwives, women need more support than they are getting in the early days of their baby's life.

She explained: "Helping people to breastfeed is such an investment in people's future health.

"It makes no sense at all to be cutting the amount of help that women get and the amount of support that they get."

Ms Montagu noted that with more advice women could be taught how to express milk so that they could go back to work and somebody else could feed the child its mother's breast milk.

The World Health Organization (WHO) strongly recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a child's life.

According to WHO, breastfeeding can help women return to their pre-pregnancy weight faster and will also reduce their risk of breast and ovarian cancer later in life.
