High fat low carb diet 'can repair kidney damage'

Mount Sinai School of Medicine

A controlled diet that is high in fat and low in carbohydrate can reverse the effects of kidney damage caused by people with diabetes, research has shown.

Scientists at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York found that this ketogenic diet can improve kidney damage in mice with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

The findings are published in the journal PLoS ONE and show the effects of putting 50 per cent of the mice on the diet for eight weeks, after which time the effects of kidney damage were reversed.

Leader of the research Professor Charles Mobbs said: "Our study is the first to show that a dietary intervention alone is enough to reverse this serious complication of diabetes."

While the study is still in the early stages and is yet to be proved to work for humans, it could provide steps in helping people with obesity treatment and diabetes.
