Walking offers a huge range of health benefits and could even help prevent obesity.
A new study has highlighted the benefits available to patients through walking, as researchers from Harvard have linked the activity to a reduced chance of stroke.
Women who walk for two or more hours a week could cut their chances of having a stroke by as much as 30 per cent, the scientists found.
Moira Halstead, communications manager at Walking for Health, commented: "Walking is great for helping to prevent stokes. Every year approximately 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke. Most of those are over 65 and walking is an activity which over 65s can do because it's accessible, on your doorstep and you go at your own pace."
She added that the activity can also help to tackle obesity, which she claims is important because "more than two thirds of women aged 55 to 74 are overweight or obese".
While walking may help to keep off the pounds, weight loss surgery could be required to kick start a healthy lifestyle.
