Aviva has new research highlighting a lack of awareness of some basic health indicators. While over 8 out of 10 people knew their weight, fewer than half were aware of their blood pressure. This fell to only 30% when it came to cholesterol. On further inspection the statistics become more worrying. Only one in six aged 36-45 knows their cholesterol level despite this being a key time when people can lower their risk.
Dr Doug Wright for Aviva Health says, "High blood pressure and cholesterol have been linked to heart disease, a leading cause of death in the UK. These statistics are worrying and highlight that we, as a nation, need to take more control over our health. Small steps can have a hugely beneficial impact on your health. To help and encourage our customers to take steps to lead a healthier lifestyle we have added MyHealthCounts to our private health insurance. Keeping fit is not just about visiting the gym. Simply going for a brisk walk or gardening can improve your fitness. Coupling this with a healthy well-balanced diet can make a real difference. That is why we reward our customers with up to 15% discount off their health insurance renewal premium for demonstrating good health, whatever steps they take to get there."
MyHealthCounts contains a wealth of invaluable information including a health assessment tool and an online coach offering personalised advice on the simple steps individuals can take to improve their health.
Recognising that many people may not know their true health measurements, Aviva has also arranged preferential rates for its health insurance customers for pharmacy health checks at over 600 pharmacies across the UK.
