Assistance 'benefits older people'

Regardless of the condition leading to their deaths, older people benefit from assistance with daily activities.

This is according to research conducted by scientists from Yale University, which revealed that help with things like washing, dressing and walking is needed by all older people towards the end of their lives.

Lead author of the study, Thomas M. Gill, commented on the results.

"We found that the need for services to aid in activities of daily living is at least as great for older persons dying from organ failure and frailty as for those dying from more traditional terminal conditions such as cancer."

He added: "We also found that the burden of disability in the last year of life was greatest among participants who died from advanced dementia."

Despite this, UK government plans to reform social care are largely thought to be too difficult to fund.

Private nursing homes could offer a better option to people who are considering how to look after older members of their family.
