Prince reveals epilepsy condition

Diminutive pop singer Prince has revealed that he receives treatment for epilepsy, a condition he has lived with since childhood.

The superstar songwriter, actor and musician found the condition terrifying when he was young and his family struggled to understand the symptoms he displayed.

The pain and isolation of suffering from epilepsy prompted him to play instruments as a means of escaping the condition.

He told PBS: "I've never spoken about this before but I was born epileptic. I used to have seizures when I was young.

"My mother and father didn't know what to do or how to handle it but they did the best they could with what little they had."

He added that he was teased at school and compensated for the difficulties by wearing flamboyant clothes and drawing attention to himself through his singing and performing.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson, the pop singer has also been called The Artist Formerly Known as Prince and gave himself a name in the form of an unpronounceable symbol for most of the 1990s.
