Obesity surgery up at BMI Healthcare hospitals

BMI Healthcare
The number of people undergoing obesity surgery at BMI Healthcare hospitals has risen by more than 30 per cent, new figures show.

According to parent company General Healthcare Group (GHG), its figures show a significant increase in demand between October 2008 and February 2009 compared with the same period in the previous financial year.

Duff Bruce, consultant bariatric surgeon at the BMI Albyn Hospital in Aberdeen, said that the increase is due to a number of factors.

"These factors include increased awareness of the health benefits of surgery as well as a change in the public's - and to some extent the medical profession's - perception," Mr Bruce claimed.

"There is a huge positive opportunity for many more people in the UK to benefit from weight loss surgery."

However, the expert noted that obesity surgery should not be regarded as a quick-fix solution but as part of a holistic approach to weight loss.

BMI Healthcare is the largest independent provider of private healthcare in the UK and operates nearly 60 hospitals nationwide
