Smokers looking for cover, such as cheap senior life insurance, should tell the truth, as companies can check if they are falsely claiming to be non-smokers, according to Action on Smoking and Health (ASH UK).
Research manager for the public health charity, Amanda Sandford, explains that insurance companies can incorporate tests into medical examinations, which can assess if a person is still a smoker, "There are reasons for offering non-smokers better premiums .We do know that those people will live longer."
She was commenting on the increasing trend for insurers, who provide policies such as over-50 life insurance, to request evidence that an applicant has quit smoking, which can lead to cheaper premiums.
