Pioneer, a specialist income protection provider, which is a trading name of Exeter Friendly Society, says it paid 96% of all the income protection claims it received in 2007.

The figure is down slightly from 96.89% in 2006.

Musculoskeletal and back injuries continued to account for the majority of claims (32.76%), followed by operations (14.55%) and fractures (11.66%).

A new category - dental and optical - represented 8.09% of claims.

Andrew Chapman, Pioneer chief executive, says: "We believe that it is vital to publicise claims statistics to reassure policyholders of the importance and value of this crucial form of protection insurance. We were the first provider to reveal our IP claims statistics and are committed to doing so annually. If the IP market is to reach full potential, providers have a responsibility to be open and transparent with consumers."
