Cosmetic surgery booming in Wales

Welsh Flag

The number of people in Wales opting for cosmetic surgery has increased dramatically, according to new figures.

Falling costs of plastic surgery procedures as well as improved access to treatment means that many more women and men are keen to undergo operations to improve their appearance, especially in Wales, reports the Western Mail.

Recent figures published by The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) showed that there has been a 31 per cent increase in demand for cosmetic surgery throughout the UK over the past year and the relocation of several high-quality surgeons to Wales has helped to further boost demand in the region.

Douglas McGeorge, consultant plastic surgeon and president of the BAAPS, said: "These figures reflect the growing acceptance of aesthetic surgery, particularly in the areas of body contouring and anti-ageing."

He added: "I attribute at least some of this trend to the continued media coverage, which provides the public with an idea of what surgical procedures can achieve, as well as technological advances that improve safety and reduce costs."

A total of 92 per cent of all cosmetic procedures in 2006 were conducted on women, with the top five treatments involving breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, liposuction, face/neck lifts and breast reduction.
