Acupuncture pinpointed as a little lifesaver

A pregnant employee off work for weeks because of chronic morning sickness has hailed acupuncture treatment as a little lifesaver after she was back on her feet and at her desk after just one session.

Naomi Thompson at CPP Group decided to try acupuncture after a friend reminded her it was available as a benefit on the Westfield Health Flex Plan. The York-based company offers the health cash plan as part of its flexible benefits scheme for staff and, after more than three weeks’ sickness absence and other tried and failed remedies and treatments, Naomi decided to give acupuncture a go.

Naomi explains, "I was off work for nearly a month because of morning sickness. The doctor signed me off because it was making me chronically ill – I couldn’t eat and I was losing weight and becoming very weak. As I was pregnant they used a no-needles approach and a technique involving pressure points on my body. I stopped being sick the very next day. It was a little lifesaver. The morning sickness had lasted 18 weeks but after that I felt great and could enjoy my pregnancy.”

The single acupuncture session, the cost of which Naomi was able to claim back thanks to the Flex Plan, solved the problem. And after her son was born Naomi, who has Level 5 cover on the Flex Plan, was delighted to receive a £250 maternity payment from Westfield.
