Surgeons back smaller breast reductions

Surgeons back smaller breast reductions

Cosmetic surgery experts have found that breast reduction surgery can provide significant health benefits for smaller-framed women.

Although small women have proportionally smaller breasts than large women, they may still be too large and uncomfortable for their frame.

Yet many surgeons make a decision on whether or not to operate based on a woman's breast size and not the proportions of her body.

A new study, published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, found that a breast reduction of less than 500 grams per breast can greatly ease back, neck and shoulder pain among smaller-framed women.

Among the 59 patients involved in the study, all of whom had complained of breast-related pain, breast reduction surgery brought about a dramatic decrease in discomfort.

"Women were also greatly relieved that they were more able to engage in healthful activities such as running or playing sports - demonstrating that breast reduction surgeries have even wider health implications," said Dr Jason Spector, co-author and cosmetic surgeon at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

"Women come in all shapes and sizes, and we're just pointing out that breast reduction - like many other surgeries - is definitely not a one-size-fits-all proposal," he added.
