Men who have prostate cancer have an increased chance of suffering a hip fracture, it has been revealed.
A study conducted on more than 60,000 men found that those who have prostate cancer are around four times more likely to suffer a hip fracture than men unaffected by the condition, while men aged between 50 and 65 with prostate cancer were eight times more likely to suffer a hip fracture.
"Our study showed that more than three per cent of hip fractures in men aged 50 and over can be attributed to prostate cancer," confirmed lead researcher Dr Bo Abrahamsen.
"And the risk remains even when men have recovered from the disease."
Men who suffered from fractures were also found to be more likely to live alone and be in a lower income group.
The research is published in the October issue of the urology journal BJU International.
